The event is scheduled from 8:30 p.m. until midnight at the Everett Yacht Club.Students organizing South Whidbey High School’s prom said a lack of communication between them and school administration led to a recent and unnecessary argument about whether or not Bayview High School students may purchase tickets to the high school prom.On Tuesday, South Whidbey junior class secretary Ashley Pattis sent a letter to Bayview High School administrator Diane Moondancer stating that junior and senior students at Bayview High School are welcome at the prom and may buy tickets for the June 2 event. The letter signals a reversal of the school’s stated position on prom ticket sales to Bayview students earlier this month, when high school principal Mike Johnson said tickets would only be sold to South Whidbey High School students. Pattis said plans to invite the Bayview students to attend prom were in the works when the school’s prom policy was questioned. She said the prom committee and the Associated Student Body (ASB) decided in early April that Bayview students should be given the opportunity to buy prom tickets. That decision, she said, reached school administration too late to counter recent letters to the editor in the South Whidbey Record and a news article in which Johnson and Diane Moondancer, Bayview High School director, confirmed that Bayview students could not purchase tickets to the prom.It’s just really frustrating, Pattis said. People need to come to the source.Junior class president Kirsten Smethurst said some of the confusion over the issue may stem from the fact that Bayview students were not invited to last year’s prom due to limited space. The 2000 prom was held on a boat, which was too small to accommodate all the South Whidbey High School students who wanted to attend. This year’s prom will be held at the Everett Yacht Club, which is large enough to hold all students who wish to attend.Mike Johnson said he did know that the ASB was planning to invite the Bayview students on April 2, the day he was interviewed for The Record story. However, the plans were still unfinished and students were leaving for spring break, so the school still had no policy for prom ticket sales to Bayview students. Johnson said he and the ASB wanted to invite the Bayview students to the South Whidbey prom since the school’s small number of students makes it difficult for them to hold their own prom.With Tuesday’s invitation, Bayview students may begin buying prom tickets along with South Whidbey students as of May 8.They’ll be treated just like anybody else, Johnson said.Diane Moondancer said the letter from Pattis and the junior class is exactly what the Bayview students wanted. She said she knew the South Whidbey juniors would include the Bayview students since, after all, they were classmates with most of the Bayview students at some point in their academic careers.It is an acceptable solution, Moondancer said.
