Time to haul out those old wheels, wagons, bicycle parts, roller skates, wood, metal, paint and banners.

Langley’s annual Soup Box Derby will be Saturday, Sept. 19.

“It’s for the young at heart who want to have fun for one day,” said Tucker Stevens of the Langley Community Club, sponsor of the event.

Cars limited only by the imagination will race down First Street to the cheers of fans lining the hill, Stevens said.

All vehicles must have brakes and not weigh more than

300 pounds, and riders must wear helmets, he said.

This year there will be no entry fee, Stevens said, although a

$5 membership in the community club is required for insurance.

“With the drop in the economy this year, we just want to help out,” Stevens said. However, donations would be gratefully accepted.

The race, but for a few breaks in the early years, has been an annual community tradition since 1972.

Last year, on a rain-soaked day, teams entered 14 vehicles. One of the most popular was a coffin.

Back this year will be the Manta Ray, and the outhouse-on-wheels with the numbers 1 and 2 painted on the side, Stevens said.

Stevens himself, with Mayor Paul Samuelson in his crew, promises to enter a “secret racer,” but he wouldn’t elaborate.

“I won the race once,” he said. “I’m coming out of retirement.”

Stevens said registration and preliminaries will begin about 8 a.m. at the parking lot of US Bank, Second Street and Anthes Avenue.

The race will begin at the top of First Street about 10 a.m.

Although trophies will be presented, “there’s never really a winner,” Stevens said. “Everybody’s just out to have a good time.”
