“South Whidbey 0 0 0 0 – 0King’s 7 20 3 0 – 40Troubles in the red zone kept South Whidbey from making the football game at King’s Garden High School much closer than it was on Friday night. The hosts, behind the outstanding running of Masaki Matsamoto, beat the visiting Falcons 40-0. But it’s not as if the visitors failed to launch a few scoring threats of their own.Trailing 13-0 early in the second quarter, the Falcons, with Bryan Wenker calling the signals, marched to the King’s 1 yard line where it was first and goal. But four consecutive cracks at the goal line were turned back by the Knights. The Knights then marched 99 yards for another score, putting the game out of reach. The drive was capped by a 49-yard run by Matsamoto, who gained 309 yards in 20 carries and scored four times. He’s maybe not the toughest running back we’ve faced, but he’s the most deceptive. He can change directions on a dime, said Falcon coach Mick Heggenes, describing Matsamoto. The rest of the Knights combined for only 34 yards rushing, but Matsamoto didn’t need any help. The Falcons drove to within the King’s 15-yard line on three other occasions but failed to put points on the board every time. Two interceptions, one at the 5 and one in the endzone, spoiled two drives, and the third ended with a fumble at the goal line on a pitch to the halfback. We’ve got to learn to take care of the ball when we have scoring opportunities, Heggenes said.King’s rushed for 342 yards and passed for 48, including one 22-yard scoring play.South Whidbey totaled 138 yards rushing, with Justin Shelton leading the way with 78 yards on 6 carries. Nick Helland gained 31 yards on 4 runs, and also caught 5 passes for 66 yards.Wenker connected on 10 of 23 passes for 137 yards and threw 3 interceptions. Jeremy Iversen entered the game in the third period and threw 4 times for 56 yards and 1 interception. The Falcons are now 1-1 in league play and 1-2 overall as they return home this Friday night to take on Blaine, which is 0-3 this season. Blaine fell to Meridian 39-14 last Friday. In other North Cascades Conference action last week, Lynden Christian thrashed Granite Falls 74-0, Lakewood shut out Nooksack Valley 20-0, and Sultan beat Mount Baker 20-8. “
