“Whidbey Island salmon anglers should be happy with the new seasons announced last week by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The season starts one month earlier than last year in Area 9 on Whidbey’s west side, with the Aug. 1 starting date coinciding with all other areas around Whidbey.Dick Franette represented the Whidbey Island Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers and the Lagoon Point Community during the lengthy season-setting process.Franette is pleased with the outcome. I’m delighted, he said Tuesday. It’s the best season we’ve had in years.Depending on the area, the daily limit will range from two to four salmon. And with this being an odd-numbered year, there should be plenty of pink salmon to add to the usual mix of coho, chinook and chum.We were able to provide some good fishing opportunities this year because of the strong return of both hatchery and wild salmon expected in many areas, said Phil Anderson of Fish and Wildlife.Prior to the seasons being adopted, they were approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service which administers the Endangered Species Act. “
