“Completion of the new Saratoga fire station is now in the hands of Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Company in Federal Way.The Fire Protection District 3 commissioners on Wednesday night approved a takeover agreement, with Fidelity, giving the firm the power to hire a new contractor and oversee the project. The change was made necessary when the general contractor for the $350,000 construction job stopped work in mid-August. Glory Developers, Inc., a Federal Way company, closed its doors and is unable to complete the contract, according to Fidelity.Since Fidelity had issued surety performance and payment bonds for the project, that company was left with the responsibility of seeing the job completed. The surety company may well have saved our bacon, said Fire Chief Don Smith at Wednesday’s meeting. The agreement was signed by commissioners Bill Benjamin, Mike Helland and Bob Elliot, acting on the advice of the district’s attorney.Fidelity will be responsible for hiring a new contractor who will finish the job as designed, and the fire district retains the right to make change orders if desired. Work on the Saratoga station began in June. The foundation was poured but not much work was done beyond that point. One thing that will change is the schedule. Originally slated for completion by Nov. 17, the agreement calls for extending the completion date to Jan. 17, 2001. “
