“If the school levy election were a horse race, we’d be heading for a photo finish with only a furlong to go.With all but about 800 county-wide absentee ballots counted Tuesday afternoon, the South Whidbey levy was barely hanging on to the 60 percent majority needed to pass — 60.01 percent, according to figures from the Island County Auditor’s Office.The vote count was 2911 yes to 1929 no. In plain numbers, levy supporters had only a seven vote cushion over the minimum needed to pass the levy.Dr. Lisa Bjork, superintendent, has spent the last week watching absentees cut into an already-narrow lead on election night. This is going on way too long, she said after Tuesday’s count was announced.As a precaution, the school board will meet Wednesday morning to adopted a resolution needed to put the levy on the ballot again in April. That resolution, if needed, must be submitted to the auditor’s office by Friday.The other South Whidbey spending proposal on the March 7 election ballot continues to fail. The Parks and Recreation District bond support had dwindled to only 58.7 percent as Tuesday afternoon. The parks commissioners will discuss the election results at a meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the Parks District office.Elections officer Loann Gullick said the Auditor’s Office hoped to complete the vote count today.
