“After arriving at Bayview at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the Sears house will have to wait at least a couple of months before it will sit on a new foundation. In the background is historic Bayview Hall.Jim Larsen / staff photoAt 4:30 a.m. Sunday, something out of the ordinary sprang up in an old potato patch across the street from the Bayview Community Hall.Painted white, made of wood, and spanning something near 1,000 square feet, it definitely was not a potato. It was a house — the Sears house to be specific — and sitting on the back of a trailer in that potato patch, it was just one step from having a permanent home.Plucked from the Greenbank Farm at midnight Saturday, the turn-of-the-century catalog-ordered kit home will soon be a permanent part of the Bayview community. Goosefoot Community Fund, a private, nonprofit organization that is renovating the Bayview Cash Store and turning the Bayview Corner area into a testbed for sustainable and environmental business practices, will begin restoring the house sometime during the next two months and will make it a functional part of the Bayview community.Linda Moore, an attorney working for Goosefoot, said Tuesday that the Sears house will eventually be an overnight hostel for bicyclists. Within the next few months, Goosefoot will begin construction on a new building for the Velocity Bikes bike shop on the old potato patch property. The shop and hostel will be a draw for the crowds of bicycle tourists who ride local roads each summer. However, the eventual function of the Sears house will not supersede the importance of the house’s restoration. Moore said Goosefoot will research the original design of the house extensively, learning what sorts of materials should be used to restore it. The actual restoration work promises to be painstaking, since up to 75 percent of the structure has rotted beyond repair. Moore estimated it could cost as much as $200,000 to restore the house. No renovation work will be done on the house until it is placed on a foundation. “
