“Looking to make the intent of its recent liquor enforcement actions more clear to South Whidbey liquor sellers, the Island County Sheriff’s Department will hold an informational meeting on Nov. 21 at the South Whidbey American Legion.During the past 11 months, undercover officials from the Washington State Liquor Control Board working with members of the Sheriff’s Office have handed out more than a dozen citations to local liquor merchants for selling to underage customers. Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Norrie, who administers South Whidbey’s Reduce UnderAge Drinking (RUAD) program, said this week that the two-agency liquor enforcement campaign is designed to be zero tolerance. But, he said, that does not mean that liquor merchants and the authorities should be adversaries. The sellers are only a small part of the problem, Norrie said Wednesday. We’re not out to make them miserable. The informational meeting stems partially from a recent pair of incidents. Norrie said a local liquor merchant questioned him about the veracity of the RUAD program after deputies did not cite a number of minors caught at a recent drinking party. The deputies poured out all the alcohol at the party and made certain all those at the gathering made it home safely. The party was reported by the liquor merchant. Some time later, Norrie said, an employee working for that liquor merchant sold alcohol to an undercover minor. The business was cited. At the meeting, Norrie said, representatives from the Sheriff’s Department, Island County Probation and state Liquor Control Board will explain the decision-making process that determines whether or not to cite an offender. They will be open to any questions. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. “
