“A lone first-half goal and a tenacious defensive effort started the 2001 season off on the right foot for the South Whidbey High School girls soccer team Thursday, Sept. 6.Back in action for the first time since they took third place in the state tournament last year with a 1-0 win over Klahowya, the Falcons picked up where they left off by hanging on to a single goal for about 60 minutes in a 1-0 win over Mount Baker.Senior Jaci Gutzmer made the score at the midpoint of the first half. After that, it was up to goalkeeper Kellie Horn and the Falcon defense to hold off the Mountaineer strikers.Horn had as much to do with the win as Gutzmer thanks to some early heroics. Minutes into the game, referees awarded the Mountaineers with a penalty kick. Horn blocked the shot to keep the score at 0-0.Falcon head coach Paul Arand said the game was a good start, but was also a reminder that the team needs to score more often. Overall, he said, the game was what he wanted to see.I thought everyone played really hard, he said.In the junior varsity game, the Falcons overwhelmed Mount Baker for a 7-0 win. Scorers included Sonya Morphew, Allyson Riggs, and Taryn Langlois. Goalkeepers for the game were Riggs and Ashley Cotton. “
