“Until Meridian’s defensive squad got in their way Monday night, South Whidbey’s boy soccer players seemed to be on their way to a scoring record for the North Cascades Conference.The team, which scored 14 points in their first two outings a week ago, continued kicking over the weekend as though they wanted to wear out the opposition’s nets.On Friday night, the Falcons downed Lakewood in a decisive 4-0 contest, then turned around to victimize Sultan for the second time in 11 days, peppering the Turks 7-1. But on Monday night, the Falcons ran up against Meridian like a car smacking a brick wall, knocking heads with the Trojans through a 0-0 regulation before winning a 4-2 shootout for a 1-0 NCC win.Highlights for the three-game road stretch came in all three games. Falcon goalkeeper Mike D. Johnson scored the second goal of his varsity career when he beat Lakewood’s keeper Friday on a penalty kick. Senior George Supang was a standout both on Friday and Saturday, playing a supporting role against Lakewood by racking up two assists, then by helping down Sultan by scoring two goals. Also getting star time was Clay Reaves, who scored his first goal of the season in the Sultan game with a 25-yard shot, and senior Mike J. Johnson, who tallied his first-ever varsity goal late in Saturday’s game.The Meridian game saw defenseman Aaron McCabe shine in his role as a shootout goalkeeper. He turned away one penalty shot as Kevin Brink, Supang, Smith-Groening, and Blake Skouras scored to give the Falcons the 4-2 shootout win. Now 5-0, the conference-leading Falcons are tearing into the meat of their season. On Friday, they will meet Lynden Christian at South Whidbey’s Waterman Field for the most important game of the year. The Falcons slipped by the Lyncs last spring in a 1-0 district playoff game to go to the state playoffs. The 3-0 Lyncs, who were the NCC regular season champs, will be looking for some payback.Falcon coach Mark Helpenstell said he expected Monday’s game to be tough. He and his players got what they expected. On top of that, they received some valuable preparation for Friday’s game, which probably will not resemble the Falcons’ early wins.The Falcons play Lynden Christian at home at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
