“Saturday was a great day for South Whidbey High School’s soccer players.On Saturday morning, the Falcons kept the ball on the ground against an unpredictable Mount Baker squad and beat the Mountaineers 4-1 in a tiebreaker game that gave South Whidbey second place in the final North Cascades Conference standings.Then, about two hours after the final whistle blew on their game, the Falcons watched as the Sultan Turks upset NCC champion Lynden Christian in a 1-0 game that left the Lyncs bewildered and set the South Whidbey players salivating for their own showdown with the Lyncs Tuesday night.Just winning against Mount Baker would have been exciting enough. Senior R.J. Erickson made sure the game was never in doubt by scoring two goals early, then watched teammates George Supang and Josh Mitchell boot goals of their own to ice the contest. The Falcons lost a strange match to the Mountaineers on April 17 during a windy, cold game on the Mount Baker soccer field and, according to Falcon coach Mark Helpenstell, were looking to make up for the loss Saturday. They did that and more.It was just fun to watch, Helpenstell said. Now 14-3, the Falcons are breathing down the necks of the 14-2 Lyncs. Tuesday’s game was played too late to be reported in this edition of The Record, but if the Falcons win the game, they get an express ticket to the state tournament. If they lose, they will play at Waterman Field Thursday against the winner of today’s game between Sultan and Mount Baker. To make it to state on that track, the Falcons would have to win three games in a row. “
