“Nothing but net.That sums up the South Whidbey High School boys soccer season so far. After blasting out of the gate last week with a 7-0 win against Sultan, the Falcon boys scorched the turf at Waterman Field Tuesday in a 7-2 romp over Mount Baker. Now with 14 total goals scored for the season, the Falcons have put more points in the stat books in two games than they did during their entire district and state playoff run last year.So what’s the secret?The guys are playing superb possession ball, said Falcon coach Mark Helpenstell. The passing game is going very well.Well indeed. The Mountaineers hardly got a foot on the ball, falling behind 7-0 before Baker’s Abe Thalhofer put a pair past Falcon backup goalkeeper Craig Peterson in the 68th and 76th minutes. During the other seven-eighths of the game, the Falcons played ball-hog offense and defense, almost completely shutting the Mountaineers out of the game.The pain started early for Baker when sophomore Abe Smith-Groening waited only until the two-minute mark before putting the Falcons’ first score past Baker goalkeeper Robby Orlowski. Four minutes later, George Supang walked a second goal in, faking Orlowski into blocking low while he kicked high.The game went back and forth until the 30-minute point, when Kevin Brink kicked the first goal of an eventual hat trick. Supang was also a multiple scorer in the game, racking up a second dinger in the 54th minute. Josh Mitchell punctuated Supang’s shot by scoring his own goal 60 seconds later.On defense, the Falcons kept goalkeeper Mike Johnson out of trouble, allowing him to maintain a sparkling 0.5 goals-against season average.The Falcons played against Lakewood Friday after this edition of The Record had gone to press. Their next game is a road contest against Meridian Monday night. “
