Some SummerFun classes filling, others near empty

But while some classes are filled, SummerFun organizers say others have lots of space still available.

Teens bored with vacation can still sign up for swimming, dodge ball, Ultimate Frisbee, soccer and mural art through the SummerFun program. Cost of the classes is $10; scholarships are available.

SummerFun is sponsored by the South Whidbey Community Engagement Center and the South Whidbey Commons, in collaboration with the Family Resource Center, South Whidbey School District, Island Athletic Club, and Good Cheer.

SummerFun isn’t the only game in town for those with plenty of time on their hands this summer.

There is still space in day camps sponsored by the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District. Activities range from games, to exploring beaches to fun water oriented activities at the Community Park during the month of August.

Getting on the water seems to be a favorite. The water ski/wakeboard clinic, one of South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District’s most popular programs, is usually one of the first classes to fill up.

Both sessions this summer are filled.

Another popular class has netted plenty of participants this year.

“Tennis for 8- to 11-year-olds is virtually filled up,” said parks program director Jerry Wojtech. “There is still plenty of space for 5- to 7-year-olds.”

But young Ichiro wannabes can still sign-up for Falcon Baseball Camp July 24 through 28. However, basketball camp in filling up fast. Both camps have South Whidbey High School coaches and players as instructors.

Whidbey Children’s Theater reports there is space in most of its programs, including drama classes and stage production camps.

Young actors can try their hand at singing and dancing in “Song and Dance Review, 100 years of Broadway,” Aug. 5, 7-11 and 14 through 16. More serious thespians might enjoy Shakespeare Camp, which culminates with a performance of “As you Like It,” July 24 through Aug. 11.

Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, or WICA, offers a number of youth theater activities. Camps include a technical course on how to put on a stage show together.

The Northwest Language Academy offers French, Japanese and Spanish camps for parent and preschoolers and day camps for children 7 to 14. For information call 360-914-0491.
