Pastor Wenzek gives sermon at SWCC

The Apostle Paul had some great advice for those Christians who really wanted to get along well in life. Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church, Pastor Darrell Wenzek speaks on the topic, “Essentials for Living the Christ-like Life,” based on Paul’s letter to the Colossians 4:2-6.

Morning worship begins at 10 and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading an inductive study into Paul’s Letter to the Church at Ephesus and Art Angst leading a study into the Gospel of Luke. These are open classes where everyone is invited.

South Whidbey Community Church is a local independent, non-denominational church that adheres to the National Association of Evangelical’s Statement of Faith. It is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Rev. Rodriguez gives inspiring message

Rev. Eddie Rodriguez will give the talk “The Will to Wake Up” at Unity of Whidbey on Sunday.

The process of awakening releases you from the heaviness of the world. Having the will to reclaim your self empowers you to enjoy being in the world, but not be hooked by the dream. Wake up and create a beautiful dream. Rodriguez, a well-known motivational speaker from South Florida, returns to share this inspiring message.

Musical accompaniment will be by Talia Toni Marcus, and the platform assistant will be Joy Williams.

After the worship celebration, a Heart Circle will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

All are welcome.

In addition, Rodriguez joins with other members of the congregation to cook and serve an authentic Cuban dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday, with all proceeds to benefit the church.

The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome.

Unity of Whidbey is located in its new chapel at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley.

Unity of Whidbey also maintains office hours at the church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

See the Unity Web site at www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Blessing of the Animals at UUCWI

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island will hold a “Blessing of the Animals” at Sunday’s service.

All are invited to bring a favorite animal to this outdoor, intergenerational service. All animals must be restrained — either in a cage or on a leash/tether. Bring a photo if your animal would be unhappy in a crowd or if your favorite pet has passed away. Children may bring a stuffed animal.

This service is both fun and serious in showing the congregation’s commitment to the interdependent web. Rev. Kit Ketcham will bless each animal and photo.

There will be childcare but no religious education during August.

The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Island Transit is the topic at adult forum

“Island Transit on the Move” is the topic of the next adult forum at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland.

Lisa Dugger, operations supervisor at Island Transit, and Phyllis Brett, specialized services administrator, will provide an overview briefing on the bus agency, and then focus their discussion on fixed-route service and paratransit, two services that may be of considerable interest to the congregation.

The forum starts at 9:15 a.m. Sunday; Ted Brookes will present.

A study of two accounts of creation

Do you believe that “God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good,” or do you believe in the misty version that God created imperfect children?

“No one can reasonably doubt that the purpose of this allegory — this second account in Genesis — is to depict the falsity of error and the effects of error” (Science and Health).

On Sunday, Aug. 22, the Christian Science sermon analyzes the two accounts of creation in the Bible to determine how we can claim, without fear, the “good” that God saw in Creation.

The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road). Everyone is welcome.
