After getting their only wins of the season on a diet of non-conference opponents, the girls from South Whidbey finally put one in W column in the North Cascades standings Friday.

In a plodding game at Meridian, the Falcons depended more on their defense than offense as they pulled out a 40-34 victory. Most crucial to the game was a slight scoring edge in the second half and two defenders who produced more steals than they had points.

Deadlocked at 17-17 after the first two quarters of play, the Falcons and Trojans were an irresistible force leaning on an immovable object. But during the games final two quarters, sophomore Bronwyn Russell and senior Lauren Johnson took away the scoring opportunities the Trojans desperately needed as they combined for 14 total steals.

In the scoring department, senior Hilary Wick was the only Falcon in double digits with 13 points. Next were Russell and Julie Robinson, each with six. Half of Russell’s scoring came from a three-pointer that added punch to South Whidbey’s game. Erin Iddins provided the second half of the 1-2 combination with a three-pointer of her own.

Though 5-6 overall, the Falcons are still at the bottom of the NCC pile with a 1-6 conference record. But with half the season yet to go, a playoff spot is still within range. Sharing the same record in NCC play are Granite Falls and Meridian, while Sultan languishes not much higher up the list at 2-4.

Winning with a wider margin Friday were the junior varsity Falcons, who gapped the Trojans 47-34 in a solid win. Dannette Waterman lead the JV Falcons with a 13-point scoring show.

The girls go back on the road Friday with a game against Sultan.
