South Whidbey readies for major Music Festival

A big weekend of music on Aug.4 and 5 will bring national bands to South Whidbey Community Park. Among the performers will be legendary rock star Country Joe McDonald. The festival will feature 13 bands plus instrument workshops.

“Artemis, a popular island band, will perform at the August music festival.There are a number of new Southend ticket outlets for the big weekend of music coming to South Whidbey Community Park the weekend of Aug. 4-5. National and local bands will play at a Music Festival from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10-8 Sunday in a benefit for cerebral palsy; proceeds will help islanders with their many expenses.Tickets are now available at Momentum gym and Murphy’s Home Furnishings at Ken’s Korner Mall in Clinton; at Renaissance Salon and Joe’s Island Music in Langley; and Webb’s Department Store in Freeland; or call 360-678-9228. Tickets for the entire weekend are $50, or $35 per day (with 13 bands playing, that’s about $4 a band). Under 16 pay $15 a day and under age 5 get in free. Among the performers are the Grammy-nominated Nickel Creek Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard, the Austin Lounge Lizards, Country Joe McDonald, Janie Cribbs, Artemis, Blue Marble and Dana Lyons of Cows with Guns fame. There are 13 bands in all, and the weekend festival also includes a harmonica workshop, a mandolin workshop and one on guitar maintenance. South Whidbey Rotary will handle concessions, with proceeds earmarked for its skate/bike park. Other island organizations will also be involved in the festival.The festival is produced by Whatever Events, a nonprofit corporation. The group is still seeking sponsors for some of the expenses.
