“Boating safety classes offeredExperienced Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadron instructors will teach boating safety on South Whidbey this month at the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club. All boaters will be interested in Navigating with GPS, a two-hour course planned for Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m. Fee is $15. And no boater will want to miss Boating Skills & Seamanship, a multi-week class beginning Monday, April 10. Cost is $35.All Gun Club members have been notified by mail of the classes, and the public is welcome as well. Family members, especially beginners 13 and older, are encouraged to attend together. The class ends Saturday, April 8 with a session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students must attend all sessions and successfully complete all course requirements to receive a hunter education student certificate. Washington requires all first-time hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972 to complete a hunter education class in order to purchase a hunting license.Students receive instruction in firearms safety, wildlife conservation and sportsmanship. The course is taught by volunteer instructors certified by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.The hunter education course is open to everyone at no charge. Parents are encouraged to attend all training sessions.
