“Steady rain didn’t stop 175 Langley Middle School sixth graders from having a good time at Camp Orkila in October.The weather was miserable but we had a wonderful time, teacher Sheila McCue reported to the school board last week. It was the perfect way to team build.Camp Orkila is an educational facility on Orcas Island in the San Juans. The South Whidbey students spent a week there, accompanied by about 20 parents and 10 teachers. Camp staff kept the students busy from 7 a.m to 10 p.m., allowing the adults to play and learn along with them, said McCue.In recent years South Whidbey fifth graders have attended Camp Orkila, but last year the intermediate school teachers decided against it. The middle school gladly stepped in to keep the program alive, McCue indicated.Also Monday, the school board greeted the international students who are attending South Whidbey this year. They include Juliane Greenberg, Anne Greiwe, Linda Klein and Svenja Koehn, all from Germany; Saeko Ito from Japan; Fernanda Pires from Brazil; Daisy Redele and Stephanie Vanderheyden from Belgium; and Tess Williamson from Australia. “
