GOOOOOOOOOOAAAL!!!Had Joseph Supang been playing in a World Cup soccer game Wednesday night, those are the words he would have heard. Supang picked up a hat trick on Waterman Field Wednesday night in the Falcons’ 3-0 win over Mount Baker, dazzling the Mountaineers’ defenders as much as the hometown soccer spectators.Still clawing their way up from three conference losses earlier in the season, the 8-3 (10-3 overall) Falcons staked themselves to third place with the win, and may have set up a wild showdown for the first- and second-place slots. NCC leaders Lakewood and Lynden Christian both have 9-2 records, and could easily find themselves in a three way tie and possibly a couple of conference tiebreaker games with South Whidbey.Mount Baker is one NCC team that has little chance of showing up in any tiebreaker melee. Though able to tangle up the Falcons’ plays in the midfield on a number of drives, they could not haul down South Whidbey’s strikers on every play. Twenty-three minutes into the game, Lane Richards fed Supang a pass deep in Mountaineer territory, then watched as the team’s leading scorer kicked the ball into the net. In the second half, the Falcons played with a bigger midfield, pulling a player out of the offense. The strategy worked quickly. Supang broke loose about 15 minutes into the half, running 40 yards to the goal, where he surprised the goalkeeper with a zippy left-footed scoring kick. Ten minutes later he was back at the net, left footing it again after his brother George and Kevin Brink worked the ball from midfield to near the goal line.That one was nicely done, said Mark Helpenstell, the Falcons’ coach.Helpenstell said the game was not as easy a win as the score might indicate. The Mountaineers made several good shots on goal, all of which were turned away by goalkeeper Michael Johnson.In junior varsity action, the Falcons had no trouble against Mount Baker, burying the Mountaineers 10-1. Still undefeated in the NCC, the team played short handed during part of the game after injuries cut into its 11-member roster.The varsity team played NCC-leading Lakewood Friday night. They play Meridian on the road Wednesday, then come home for the season closer Friday night to play the Blaine Borderites. The Friday game starts at 6 p.m. on Waterman Field.”
