Whidbey 2-8, Lynnwood 2-5.Never let it be said that South Whidbey High School’s boys tennis team takes the easy way out.As they did last year, the 2A Falcon boys are going head-to-head with teams from bigger 3A schools exclusively. Two-thirds of the way through their schedule as of this week, the Falcons are paying the price. On Monday the team won only its second meet in 10 tries this season, beating Lynnwood 5-2.It’s a tough way to go, said head tennis coach Tom Kramer. Aside from one doubles team, no Falcon singles player or doubles team has a winning record this year. But Kramer’s players are getting a payoff. The high-level competition they face now will get them ready for post-season 2A matches that will most likely take place next spring, when most boys 2A teams play. For the rest of the regular season, however, Kramer said his team will probably struggle.We do have individual bright spots, he said. The rest of the teams just have too much depth.The brightest spot on the team is the number-two doubles pairing of Blake Skouras and Sean Edwards. The pair started the year 5-0 in doubles play, downing teams from powerhouses Everett and Arlington amongst their victims. On Monday, Skouras and Edwards picked up another win when they got past Lynnwood’s Bautistz and Thompson 7-5, 6-4. Now 7-2 as a doubles team, the pair is playing the best South Whidbey tennis this season.They’re very steady and consistent, said Falcon head coach Tom Kramer. They’re just like rocks out there.The remainder of the Falcon ranks were thinned this year when veterans Evan Jennings, Tyler Adler and Aaron Bellone were unable to turn out for the team. Jennings and Bellone were two of the team’s top singles returnees, while Adler — who suffered a season-ending injury during the preseason — was a top doubles player.With those players off the roster, Kramer said seniors Kevin Ando and Dorian Sidhu and junior George Spivakov have stepped up to play some tough tennis. Although none of the players has more wins than losses, they are making their opponents work for their wins. In Monday’s meet, both Spivakov and Sidhu nabbed singles wins, while Ando teamed up with Peter Sankey to win at number-one doubles and complete a 3-0 doubles sweep against Lynnwood.The Falcons’ only other win this year came against Arlington on Sept. 13, when they beat the Eagles solidly on a 6-1 score. Outside of those two wins, South Whidbey has come close on three occasions, losing 3-4 twice to Lake Stevens, as well as a 3-4 heartbreaker against Jackson.The Falcons will meet Arlington one more time this season in a home meet on Friday.
