Though it was intended to be a neighborly contest, a tennis meet between the South Whidbey girls and Coupeville Monday proved to be more than the visiting Wolves could handle.

The Falcons swept their northern neighbors in a brief, pro sets matchup that gave the South Whidbey girls challenging play in only two of seven matches during the team’s 7-0 meet win.

Playing single sets to eight wins, the meet went fast. At singles, an all senior Falcon lineup was dominant. Jenny Saephan easily handled Wolf Jessica Boling in the Number 1 slot 8-1. At Number 2, Kylie Bozym won 8-2 over Mindy Horr, while Falcon Molly Fox, playing in the fourth singles spot, matched that score against Coupeville’s Brianne Houlroyd. Only Jaci Gutzmer, who got a slow start in her match against Bethany Horr, had her match come down to the wire. She just got past Horr, who was nursing a shoulder injury, on a score of 8-6.

At doubles, senior Paige Oliver and sophomore Jenny Newman paired up for an 8-6 win as the Falcons’ top duo. Gena Felton and Kelsey Simmons had a slightly easier time of it in an 8-3 win at Number 2 doubles, while Maya Kocian and Rebecca Connor had the easiest match possible in an 8-0 victory.

Falcon Coach Tom Kramer said his team will get stiffer opposition Thursday when his girls play a full-strength Burlington-Edison team. The Falcons handily won a meet against the same team on March 12, but did not face all of Burlington’s top players. The team will also take on Sedro Woolley on Saturday.

“We’ll find out what we’ve got by next Monday,” Kramer said.

Thursday’s home meet starts at 3:30 p.m.
