“In their first match of the year, the South Whidbey High School boys tennis team played at a higher level than the coach anticipated.Though laden with underclassmen, the Falcons thumped the Blaine Borderites Thursday afternoon, Sept. 6, in a 5-2 match that starred the team’s only senior player and three green doubles team.Pulling off the most improbable win of the day was senior George Spivikov. Paired against 2001 state qualifier Scott Bianchi at Number 1 singles, Spivikov struggled in the opening set, losing 6-7 after a tiebreaker. But he swept the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to take the win. Falcon head coach Tom Kramer was impressed.It was a higher level of play than I expected, he said.Also winning at singles was Tim Klopfenstein, who downed Jake Hamberg 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in his first varsity match.At doubles, the Falcons were perfect. Bill Schneeman and Brian Wilson were dominant in the Number 1 match, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Blaine’s Alexander and Werdal. At Number 2, David Voye and Steven Pan took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Freal and Cross, while at Number 3 doubles Roy Ishii and Jacob Iverson were 6-2, 6-1 winners.In the extra match, freshman Kenny Johnson and sophomore Jesse Hauberg won a 6-2, 6-4 match.The Falcons play next on Tuesday against Coupeville.
