Except that David was a girl, used a tennis racquet instead of a sling, Goliath was the Stanwood girls tennis team, and the battlefield was a tennis court.Other than that, it was exactly the same.With her team deadlocked 3-3 in match play with undefeated 3A Stanwood in Wednesday’s home tennis meet, Falcon sophomore Molly Fox was South Whidbey’s only hope. Fox played a three-hour match at Number 4 singles against the Spartans’ Elizabeth Curry, and earned a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (4-0) win to put the Falcons over the top for the team’s seventh win of the year.After winning a close first set, Fox was almost shut out in the second. In the third set, Fox was a game behind Curry all the way to match point at 5-6. But with the meet on the line, Fox broke back to even at 6-6, then won the next game to take the match to a tiebreaker. Once there, she won easily 4-0.Her coach, Tom Kramer, said he was on the verge of an anxiety attack as he watched her play.She put up a valiant effort, Kramer said.Combined with doubles wins by Jenny Saephan and Kylie Bozym and Paige Jolley and Kaitlin King, and Number 3 singles player Jenny Newman, Fox’s match made the Falcons the team to beat in Wesco 3A tennis — even though they are not actually a 3A team. Having lost only one match this year — to Meadowdale — the Falcons sport the best record (7-1) of all the teams in the Wesco playing pool.Half finished with their season, the team may be in for a tougher second half. Coach Kramer said he is going to continue moving his player lineup around, as he did in the Stanwood match, to develop his girls into a playoff contender. From here on out, the winning probably will not come as easily.During the second half of the season, we won’t be a surprise (to the Wesco teams), he said.On Tuesday, the Falcons had it easier against Arlington. The girls dismantled the Tigers 7-0, beating them at every position in straight sets.The Falcons will be on spring break for the next week-and-a-half.
