Davis/Schultes 6-3, 6-1If the South Whidbey girls tennis team were the starship Enterprise, coach Tom Kramer would be Scottie.The Falcon girls are pushing it as hard as they can as the end of the regular season draws nigh, building a 9-2 hyperspace record on a diet consisting entirely of Wesco 3A tennis teams. In the past week, the team knocked off Stanwood, the number-two Wesco team, mopped the court with Arlington, and cruised through a match with Lynnwood.Along the way, the team relied on its proven winners in singles and doubles competition. Senior Lindsay Sievers won all three of her matches during the week-long streak. Having lost only once this season, Sievers ran into trouble just once, dropping the first set of her Lynnwood match before recovering to win 12 of 14 games over the next two sets.Also excelling at singles was sophomore Kylie Bozym. A regular at Number 4 singles, Bozym moved up to Number 2 Wednesday after proving herself in tight wins against Lynnwood and Stanwood players. Kramer said her experience in close matches gave her the edge in Arlington, where she won 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.She’s good with a little bit of pressure, Kramer said.The Falcon doubles teams were the basis of their success, as all three teams won against Lynnwood, Stanwood, and Arlington. Number 1 doubles players Jenny Saephan and Megan Forbes cruised through the week until they the Arlinton match. They lost the opening set of the match 2-6 before recovering 6-3, 6-4, preserving their record as the winningest doubles pairing on the team.Brita Fisher and Paige Jolley, and Kelsey Ellis and Jaci Gutzmer had an easier week, playing to straight set wins at all three meets.Kramer said was impressed with his team pull out the tough matches Wednesday. That is not an easy thing to do, since teams like 3-9 Arlington like nothing better than to knock off winning squads like the Falcons.I think we surprised them by winning so much, he said.If South Whidbey were part of the Wesco league, they would now rank as the number-two team. On Monday, the Falcons take on Wesco number-one Jackson in a contest for pride. Kramer said he does not know which way the meet will go.They’re the best in the west, he said of Jackson.The Falcons play their home and season closer next Wednesday against Monroe. The meet starts at 3:30 p.m. at South Whidbey High School.”
