“Twelve boxes of test papers produced by South Whidbey students have disappeared in the hands of the company that was supposed to grade them.The dog ate our test scores, is how Superintendent of Schools Lisa Bjork described the situation, using levity to mask her annoyance that all that testing may have gone to waste.This spring students in grades three and six were administered what is referred to as the Iowa test, the results of which are used to compare student achievement on a national basis.But it looks like this year, South Whidbey won’t have any test results to compare.The test grading company, Riverside Publishing Company, sent a letter to Bjork admitting the South Whidbey tests were missing.They may have been lost inadvertently or destroyed, the letter stated.The company did have proof that it had received the 12 boxes from South Whidbey. The tests would have been scored in one of two places: Austin, Texas or Iowa City, Iowa.Bjork said there is some hope the tests may still turn up, but the company wrote that all the normal things had been done to try to find the missing boxes.The Iowa test has nothing to do with the most publicized testing in recent years. That is the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning), which compares student knowledge against state norms. However, Bjork said the Iowa test was the only way to compare South Whidbey achievement against national norms.”
