“Call ahead for Thanksgiving dinnerFree turkey dinners are available to all, but please call ahead so planning can proceed smoothly.*For dinner at the American Legion Hall, call 321-5696.*For home delivery by VFW Mobile Turkey Unit volunteers, call 341-2539, 221-4233, or 221-5914, no later than Nov. 21.South Whidbey residents can have a free turkey dinner any way they want it on Thanksgiving thanks to a coordinated effort by American Legion Post 141 and Clinton VFW Post 7482.People who would otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving can enjoy a festive atmosphere at the Legion Hall, and partake in a spread that would make the original Pilgrims envious.Others who can’t get out of their house can have a complete dinner delivered by a cheerful volunteer driver.Here are the options:* Drive to the American Legion Hall on Highway 525 anytime between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, and enjoy an extensive menu that will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and all the fixings, including dessert. Head chef Ken McClellan and a host of other volunteers expect to serve well over 100 free meals. * If you want to enjoy the company of others but can’t drive, volunteers will pick you up, drive you to the Legion Hall, and bring you home after dinner. Call 321-5696.* If you can’t get out, you can have Thanksgiving dinner brought to you by the VFW’s famous Mobile Turkey Unit headquartered in the school district’s transportation center kitchen. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Head chef Tom Arhontas will dispatch drivers to bring you turkey and/or ham, or even roast leg of lamb (by reservation only). The extensive mobile menu includes all the holiday meal trimmings. To arrange a visit by the Mobile Turkey Unit, call 341-2539 as soon as possible. Every shut-in is welcome.
