“Pete Jordan’s Northwest landscapes are on exhibit at Gaskill/Olson this month.Three galleries open new art exhibits this weekend on South Whidbey.*An exhibit of landscape paintings in oil by Whidbey artist Truman Castle will open with an artist’s reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the Bayview Gallery.Castle says his work is primarily about painting the light, and how it changes the feeling and mood of objects around us. I love the challenge of trying to capture the rapidly changing color and abstract shadow patterns caused by the sunlight, Castle said. I try and capture the mood of a place, because that is the best way to communicate with people.Many of the works were done on location in the plein air tradition of the French impressionists.Painting this land is my way of getting close to it — what I think of as establishing what writers have called a sense of place.Approximately 40 paintings will be shown. His work is also influenced by his background in environmental sciences. Flynn-Federspiel has work inspired by a recent trip to Italy, conveying its honey-colored light in subtle colors and textures. Leake, who apprenticed under his grandfather, works in Shaker or Craftsman styles to create his handmade furniture, whose designs show the natural beauty of American hardwoods.The show will run through June 30.
