“Toddle Tunes, a musical experience for ages 3 to 6, will be starting on Thursday, Sept. 14 in Langley, and on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Coupeville. Both classes will begin at noon to allow preschool students to participate.Deborah Lund, developer of the Baby Beat classes for parents and infants, has moved up with her son Kaj to provide this 9-week session of interactive music activities for his peers and their parents. The cost for the entire session is $75.Toddle Tunes integrates singing, dancing, play-party games, fingerplays, movement, body percussion, and instrument playing. Children participate at their own level of readiness in an atmosphere that is encouraging and fun for both parent and child. As an elementary music teacher, Lund said she noticed a wide range of musical readiness in her students, just as classroom teachers discover different levels of readiness for reading or math. The concepts of steady beat and pitch recognition are Lund’s main musical focus for this class, since they are the basis for singing, dancing, and other music activities. Lund says she knows parents are the best teachers, and her goal is to support them with a repertoire of music and techniques. Music is for everyone, and if all we do is turn on the stereo, we teach our children that music is only for professionals. You don’t need a good voice, you just need to sing! she said. Lund is a certified music, classroom and library teacher and children’s author. She sings with Sing!Chronicity, the Seattle Peace Chorus, and with her husband Karl Olsen. She is also mother to three-year-old Kaj (who may choose to participate or not, Lund said). If you would like to register or want more information, contact Lund at 360-222-3174 or e-mail debnkarl@whidbey.net. “
