Island Transit presented Gary Manker, operations supervisor, as the Island Transit Spirit Award recipient for 2012.

Manker was hired on March 6, 2006 as a transit operator and from the get go, Island Transit knew that they had hired a truly unique and gifted individual, according to a press release. He became a service coordinator in early 2008 and was hired as a supervisor less than two years later.

“Gary is a ‘what did we ever do without him’ kind of individual,” said Meg Heppner of Island Transit.

“Anyone who meets Gary immediately falls prey to his incredibly unique sense of humor. We hear large bursts of laughter booming and we know it’s because Gary has undoubtedly shared his typically ‘twisted’ views. His uniqueness only touches the tip of the iceberg with his sense of humor,” Heppner said.

Manker has “unparalleled ability” to coach people to see things from different perspectives, according to the press release. His considerate and respectful style create an appreciation for the differences of others.

“Gary clearly understands that appreciation and respect for one another builds the drive and commitment to be an effective and successful member of the team. Gary, thank you for your loyalty, insightfulness and for countless and invaluable contributions you’ve made to our organization. It is with great pride and joy that we recognize Gary Manker with our 2012 Spirit of Island Transit Award,” Heppner said.
