“In a vandalism spree that may have lasted for hours, vandals broke into all but two of the Island County Fairgrounds buildings last weekend, damaging doors and locks and giving fair management a security headache.Island County Fair Association member Ruth Turner said Thursday that she believes the break-ins are the work of a group of vandals, possibly juveniles. Fair management worked all this week with the Langley Police Department to discover who broke into the buildings, but as of Friday no suspects were in custody.Turner said it appears that sometime between Friday night and Sunday afternoon the vandals entered almost every locked building on the fairgrounds, kicking in or ripping out padlocks and padlock hasps. The only two spaces left untouched were the fair office and the HOPE building.Both Turner and Langley Police Chief Bob Herzberg reported that the vandals did not take anything from the fair buildings. Rather, they committed acts of mischief. Turner, who discovered the break-ins Sunday afternoon, said the vandals collected all the fire extinguishers in the fair buildings, put them in a pile, then set one of them off. They also moved a television set from where it was stored for the upcoming Lions Club charity auction to the fair’s entertainment room. It appears that the vandals tried to plug it in at one point — a move Turner almost found laughable.We turn off all the electricity in the buildings during the rest of the year, she said.Turner said she suspects the vandals stayed away from the fair office because it is equipped with a burglar alarm. No damage estimate for the vandalism spree was available.”
