“South Whidbey’s volleyball team made a successful 2001 debut with a home win against Port Townsend Thursday night, Sept. 6.The Falcons won the non-league match with game scores of 15-8, 15-11, 5-15 and 15-10.Individual statistical leaders were two seniors, Lauren Johnson with 10 assists and Melissa Poolman with 11 kills. The team’s third senior starter, Jenny Saephan, also played well, according to coach Tim Durbin. Our senior leadership was just excellent, he said. They really set the tone.Also starting the first game were three sophomores, Katy McGillen, Jordan Tobler and Brianna Hussey. Only McGillen had varsity experience coming into this season, but coach Durbin said he was pleased with the way all three played.South Whidbey stays on its home hardwood next week with a game Tuesday against Lakewood and Thursday against Sultan. “
