“The South Whidbey volleyball team had a winning week, avenging its only loss of the season on Monday and then winning at home against Sultan on Tuesday before dropping a contest Thursday to Lakewood.Monday’s game took the Falcons to North Kitsap, a team which had handed them their only loss early in the season. This time the Falcons were ready as they beat the hosts 3-1, with games of 15-12, 15-11, 8-15, 15-5. Coach Tim Durbin attributed the final game blowout to necessity. We were trying to catch a ferry, he quipped.It was a great match, Durbin added. The girls just came to play. Individually, Brianna Hussey, only a freshman, recorded 17 assists, 5 digs, and 3 aces. Jenny Saephan was credited with 9 kills, 7 digs and 1 ace, while Molly Fox had 1 ace.Tuesday against Sultan, the Falcons faced a team that Durbin said is in a rebuilding process. The scored showed it as South Whidbey won handily, 15-6, 15-2, 15-10.Durbin was able to give playing time to a lot of his younger athletes, and he credited them with a good effort. Senior Kaitlin King led the individual stats, recording 9 assists and 1 ace, while Sam Watson tallied 7 kills.Thursday, the Lakewood Cougars visited Erikson Gymnasium and took a bite out of the Falcons, winning 3-2. The Falcons took the first two games, 15-0, 15-2, before losing the next three 15-2, 15-11, 15-8.When the week ended South Whidbey had a 4-2 overall record this season. Next Tuesday they travel to Granite Falls. So far no games have counted in the league standings. Official league play begins in October. “
