“South Whidbey Literacy, an organization of community volunteers who provide tutoring services in basic reading, writing and comprehension skills, is seeking new volunteers. The SWL services are available to people of all ages and are customized to the individual student. For example, said Linda Griesbach, advisory board member, tutors mY assist adults who need additional skills for employment opportunities, such as studying for a specialized license, or they may help a child keep pace with his peers or provide help with homework. The organization is also beginning to network with other community service and resource groups, currently embarking on partnerships with the Family Resource Center and the Tutor/Mentor Program at Langley Middle School. In addition to volunteers teaching literacy skills, SWL needs tutors in basic math skills as well as English as a Second Language. Training for ESL tutors will be held in December. There is a definite need for ELS tutors, since there are no trained tutors in the community at this time, Griesbach said.To learn more about becoming a literacy tutor or receiving tutoring services, contact SWL coordinator Chris Hoffman-Hill at 341-1787. Leave name, phone number and a brief message on the voice mail. And for anyone with an interest in literacy who may not have the time to commit to a tutoring relationship, the SWL Advisory Board is a place to volunteer in a different capacity. Call Hoffman-Hill for information about board membership. “
