“Whidbey Island’s blubbery harbingers of spring arrived just in time to usher in the vernal equinox.Several gray whale sightings have been reported in recent days, according to Greenbank resident Susan Berta, who tracks whale movements in Puget Sound through the Orca Conservancy.The first such report was made Saturday at 11 a.m. when a woman reported spotting two gray whales in Saratoga Passage between Baby Island and Fox Spit. Gray whales were reported in the same area on Monday.Each spring gray whales migrate between California and Alaska, but a number of them make a detour into Puget Sound where they are known to eat sand shrimp.
