Showing that they are just full of surprises, a South Whidbey High School baseball team that came into the 2002 season with conservative goals tied a school record Monday for consecutive wins, taking their fifth contest in a row at Mount Baker.

Behind what is becoming a extremely solid pitching squad, the now 6-2 Falcons did much of their damage against Mount Baker in 9-5 and 7-1 wins Friday and Monday, and in a towering 11-2 win over against Sultan last Wednesday.

Riding four wins going into Monday’s game, the Falcons dominated the Mountaineers on the mound and at the plate. It was not a happy rematch for the Mountaineers following Friday’s home game, in which the Falcons outslugged the visitors behind seven complete innings from senior pitcher Ben Schultz.

Things only got worse for Mount Baker with the Falcons visiting. With Josh Coleman powering the offense with a 3-for-3 performance, three RBIs and a huge, two-run home run smash in the fifth inning, the Falcons almost had the game shoved in their back pocket two innings early.

The Mountaineers stood no chance at getting close with senior Falcon hurler Bryan Wenker on the mound. Giving the hottest pitching performance to date this season for the team, Wenker tossed a two hitter and struck out 11 batters.

He didn’t do the job alone. Catcher Chris Hahn gunned down two Mount Baker base runners during the game to keep the scoreboard damage to a minimum.

In Friday’s game, the Falcon offense was almost as hot. Led by Brady Switzer’s 4-for-4 hitting, and his two RBI, first-inning double, the Falcons went up 3-0 early and never surrendered the lead.

In the second inning, the Falcons slammed in another three runs. A lead-off walk to Mike Berry followed by a Dane Guetlin single and a sacrifice fly from Tim Gabelein scored one run. Switzer batted in another run on his second single of the game, then Josh Coleman smacked a double and came home on a Wenker hit.

Against Sultan, Wenker was almost as impressive on the mound as in the Mount Baker game. He fanned 10 batters and scattered six hits and 12 walks during the compete-game victory.

The offense put the game away in the third inning with five runs scored on two Josh Coleman RBIs, a Ben Schultz RBI, and two more RBIs from Wenker.

Next up for the Falcons is a doubleheader at Lakewood Wednesday, where the Falcons will attempt to establish a school record by winning a sixth game in a row.
