“South Whidbey won its final league match of the season Wednesday to head into the bi-district boys golf tournament in fine shape.The Falcon five teamed up to score 408 on the 18-hole, par 72 course at Kayak Point. South Whidbey finished with 409 strokes, which coach Mick Heggenes describe as an excellent 18 hole score.Trailing the Falcons were Lynden Christian at 412, Mount Baker 432, Meridian 437, Blaine 448, Lakewood 478, and Nooksack Valley 504.Andy Heintz paced the Falcons individually with a 76, good for second place overall. Heintz hasn’t typically led the team this year, but Heggenes wasn’t surprised by his performance. What really helps us is that different kids step up to the plate every day, he said. Heintz played at 4 over the first nine, then finished in par. Other Falcon scorers included Alec Osenbach at 81, Bruce Hansen 83, Chuck Applebee 83 and Jeff Strong 86 .The final match victory left South Whidbey in second place in the league finals, less than 50 total strokes behind first place Lynden Christian.In other action this week, on Tuesday the Falcons made their final home appearance with a non-conference match at Useless Bay. Monroe won with a 420 followed by South Whidbey with 428 and Arlington 438. Osenbach paced the Falcons with 82, Strong shot 85, Applebee 85, Heintz 86 and Reed Dettrich 90.In a league match Monday at Homestead, hosted by Lynden, the winner was Lynden Christian with 420. South Whidbey scored 427, Mount Baker 439, Blaine 458, Meridian 462, Lakewood 481 and Nooksack Valley 513.Bryce Hansen proved to be South Whidbey’s best at playing in the high winds that dominated the match, as he scored an 81. Heintz tallied 83, Osenbach 86, Strong 88, and Applebee 89. They played outstanding for the conditions, said coach Heggenes.The Falcons now swing into playoff competition with the bi-district tournament next Thursday, May 10 at Bellingham Golf & Country Club. Teams from the North Cascades and Nisqually leagues will compete, and only the top 14 individuals will advance to state. I’d be disappointed if we only qualified on, Heggenes said. I’m hoping for two or three spots. Last year two Falcons, Charlie Bass and Dorian Sidhu, advanced to state. “
