According to the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Mackie attempted to stop her car and skidded more than 50 feet before hitting the deer at about noon Friday, Oct. 27. Her 1989 Ford Aerostar struck the deer and propelled the animal onto the car’s windshield. Mackie suffered head and neck injuries in the collision.The only passenger in the van was an infant. The infant was not identified by the sheriff’s office, but aid workers at the accident scene said the child was unhurt the crash, largely because it was secured in a child seat in the rear seat of the vehicle.The deer itself got up and ran into the woods after the accident. Sheriff’s personnel and Fire Protection District 3 Chief Don Smith searched for the animal, but were unable to find it.Mackie was treated on the scene, then was transported to Whidbey General Hospital. “
