Woman injured in Central Whidbey crash

Two South Whidbey residents were injured in a head-on collision Friday afternoon on Highway 20 near Coupeville, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A trooper wrote in his report that Jill L. Averill, 40, of Clinton was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Blazer southward on the highway when she crossed the centerline near the intersection with Jacob Road for an unknown reason. Her vehicle struck an oncoming 1998 Ford Econoline driven by Michael C. Newman, 61, of Freeland.

The Blazer rolled over and came to rest on its roof. The Ford rolled onto its side on the shoulder. Both vehicles were totaled.

Averill was seriously injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. Newman was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center in Coupeville for treatment.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

A Harborview spokesperson said Averill was in satisfactory condition as of Monday night.

The Department of Transportation routed traffic around the area of the crash while firefighters responded and troopers investigated.
