“A local couple is leading an effort to boost the Youth Dynamics program for adolescents on South Whidbey.Erik Cordsen, 26, and his wife Shelly would welcome more teenagers and adult volunteers into the organization. They live in Clinton with their 14-month-old son, Ethan. We try to go after students instead of waiting for them to come to us, Erik Cordsen said. He has a math degree from the University of Washington and develops Web sites when not working with Youth Dynamics.Youth Dynamics is nonprofit and describes itself as actively involved in dealing head-on with today’s tough issues in a manner culturally relevant to our youth. It has a non-denominational, Christian perspective, and regular meetings include games, discussions about what’s going on in the kids’ lives, and Bible study.Cordsen is well aware of the problems facing South Whidbey youth, including an increase in drug use. We have a big drug problem, he said. Adolescence is a difficult time.Shelly Cordsen heads a weekly meeting of high school girls each Thursday, while her husband leads a boys group. Each Monday, the two groups gather together at the home of Steve and Norma Smith.Cordsen said he has spent the last seven years with Youth Dynamics in California and Washington. He and his wife moved to South Whidbey in September 1998, coming from Oak Harbor. About 30 students have participated in South Whidbey Youth Dynamics this year, he said.Youth Dynamics reaches out to students not involved in church programs, and aims to work closely with church youth groups and other youth organizations in the community. In addition to weekly programs, Youth Dynamics offers an annual retreat called Rendezvous which gives students a chance to experience the outdoors through rock climbing, a high ropes course and white water rafting.Any student interested in Youth Dynamics, or adult who would like to volunteer with the group, should call 341-1474 or email ecordsen@whidbey.com”
