Arlene Marion Richardson

Arlene Marion Richardson, 82, died March 12, 2006, at her home in Lake Oswego, Ore. after a brave battle with cancer. Her memorial service will be held on June 9, 2006, at Mary’s Woods, in Lake Oswego with the Rev. Carol Davies officiating.

Arlene was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband Jack Warren Richardson, at Lake Oswego, Ore., on Nov. 25, 2001. Arlene and Jack’s ashes will be interned at the Seeley Lake Cemetery in Seeley Lake, Mont., in a private family ceremony at a later date.

Arlene was born Aug. 16, 1924 in Mason City, Iowa to Lester and Frances “Mimi” (Hines) Read.

She was raised and educated in Seattle and graduated from Ballard High School. Arlene attended the University of Washington and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in general studies in 1945.

When her children were school age, she returned to the UW for her degree in education and began teaching third grade in 1960. Arlene taught elementary education in schools in Bremerton, Redmond and Kirkland for a total of 19 years, until her retirement in 1982.

Jack was born Aug. 26, 1923 in Missoula, Mont. to R.T. and Margery “Nano” (Murdock) Richardson. He was raised and educated in Missoula. Jack attended the University of Washington and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1945.

He was initially employed by Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wisc., and then took a position with Puget Sound Power & Light in Seattle, where he remained for 38 years, retiring as the director of engineering services.

Arlene and Jack were married on June 26, 1945 in Seattle. The young couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisc., where they were both employed by Allis Chalmers. They returned to Seattle after the birth of their first child and remained in the Seattle area to raise their three children, Bruce, Phyllis and Matthew.

Arlene enjoyed playing the bassoon in junior and senior high school and attended the Cornish School of Arts. In later years she enjoyed knitting and delighted family and friends with beautifully hand-knitted gifts. She also was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, including chapters in Langley and Lake Oswego, Oregon. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.

Jack enjoyed carpentry and home building and constructed several homes for his family. He was a lifetime Rotarian, chairman of the Power Engineering Society of the IEEE, and chairman of the Kirkland United Way. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kirkland YMCA, and served as a member and chairman of the Houghton Community Council. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

Arlene and Jack were active members of the United Methodist Church in every community in which they lived. Arlene taught Sunday School and Jack served as the chairman of the church council at Lake Washington United Methodist Church; Arlene and Jack loved to travel and visited many countries around the world. They retired to Whidbey Island and wintered in Indio, Calif., before moving to Lake Oswego, Ore. For many years they spent time each summer at Holland Lake, near the town of Seeley Lake, Mont., and enjoyed hiking, boating and swimming with their children and grandchildren.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Jack. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and by his siblings Morris, Harold, Kenneth, Robert, Margery Burgie and Burton.

Arlene is survived by her brother, Garth (Mary) Read of Annapolis, Md.; her son, Bruce Warren (Kathleen) Richardson of Havre, Mont.; daughter, Phyllis Marion Richardson of Portland, Ore.; son, Dean Matthew (Jennifer Hung) Richardson of Los Angeles, Calif.; and grandchildren Suzanne, John, Warren Read, Michael, Eric and Sean.
