Daniel F. Karvasek

Jan. 21, 1943 - Aug. 6, 2020

Beloved husband, father and grandfather and well-known Whidbey Island photographer Dan Karvasek passed away on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020. After a long period of illness, he died surrounded by his wife and three children.

Born in Chicago, Ill., in 1943, Dan was a gifted athlete and excelled in track, football and basketball and was eventually named “Athlete of the Half Century” for Oak Lawn High School.

Declining a college scholarship in order to care for his ailing mother, he soon followed his dream of living near the mountains.

At 18, he moved to California and graduated from California State University at Fullerton in 1967. He married Pamela (Katie) Karvasek and was recruited by Ford Motor Co. Over his 23-year career at Ford, he was district parts sales manager in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, managing the most successful sales teams in the country.

Over those years, he and Katie raised three beautiful children.

Dan continued playing basketball, hiking, fishing and won several photography awards. In 1994, he married Christi Cook in Redmond, Wash., and the couple moved to Whidbey Island, Wash., in 1995. There, Dan started his photography business.

Known for high-quality images that capture the island’s splendor and feeling, his work gained much popularity and has been awarded and recognized extensively on Whidbey Island, nationally and internationally, including acceptance in the Kodak National Exhibition and publication in the Nikon International Calendar. His work will remain available in island stores and online at www.dankarvasek.com

Dan lived life to the fullest with an adventurous, gregarious, generous spirit and a creative, tenacious will that allowed him to do anything he put his mind to. He loved God, family and country, and his infectious enthusiasm for life endeared him to many.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Christi Karvasek; three children, Brad Karvasek, Krista Britton and Sara Lee; daughter-in-law, Leigh Karvasek; son-in-law, Ben Britton; and five grandchildren, Bradley, Gavin, Emma, Sloane and Preston.
