Margaret Mykut

Margaret Clark Mykut died Dec. 20, 2003, at her home in Clinton on Old Clinton Beach, also known as Brighton Beach.

She was raised in the Wallingford area of Seattle and graduated from Lincoln High School. She attended Washington State University, and later received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Oregon. She did graduate work at the University of Washington, where she received a master’s degree in social work. She was a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and was prominent in her profession. She was an early advocate for using social workers in medical settings. Her career spanned work in several such programs, and her last post was director of social services at University of Washington Hospital.

Mrs. Mykut had a lifelong interest in animals, and valued her companionship with a series of dogs, including dachshunds and standard poodles. She traveled whenever possible, and occasionally was joined by her two sons. Her home on Whidbey Island frequently was a gathering place for family and friends. Her grandparents, her mother and aunts and uncles were early visitors to Whidbey, and her mother, Inza Knapp, claimed she first camped on the beach of Whidbey in 1892 at age 6. Many family members are still part of that beach community.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, George K. Clark; and two sons, Michael and Matthew.

She is survived by a sister, Joanne Clark Hannah, Langley; a nephew, George Clark IV, Mission Viejo, Calif.; four cousins, all on Whidbey; and many close personal friends.

The family expressed appreciation to the Emergency Medical Services personnel and to the staff of Home Health and Hospice.

A memorial service will be announced. Memorials may be made to Friends of Home Health and Hospice, 101 Main St., Coupeville, or the South Whidbey Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, 5535 Cameron Road, Freeland.
