Opal Sayers

Opal “Ollie” Phyllis Watson Sayers was born April 16, 1923 to Frank and Gunver Watson in Bemidji, Minn.

She was one of 10 siblings. In her 20s, she worked at McDonnell Douglas in a “Rosie the Riveter” capacity.

In 1953, she married

Hal Sayers and lived in the Seattle area until 1977, when she moved to Whidbey Island. She was widowed in 1983.

Ollie lived in Coupeville when she first came to Whidbey, living at Admiral’s Cove where she was the secretary of the community club.

She had many different bookkeeping jobs in Los Angeles, San Francisco and surrounding areas in California. She also worked for the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce for 10 years.

Ollie was a member of the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club, the Eagles and the VFW. She also volunteered at Whidbey General Hospital. She was an avid bowler and dart player.

She is survived by Frank and Robert of Bemidji, Minn.; Raymond of New Mexico; one sister, Lillian Brons of Langley; two stepsons, Gerald H. Sayers (Roberta) of

Maple Valley; D. Scott Sayers of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren Kim, Paul, Monica, Tim and Scott; great-grandsons Dillon, Isaak, Benjamin, Josh, Adam, Tate and Owen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at the Bayview Senior Center.
