To the editor:

I am glad to see that our county commissioners are participants in the National Association of Counties (South Whidbey Record, March 7) and attended the Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., last week.

I am a firm supporter of any elected official attending their respective organization’s conferences. Much information about other entities with the same concerns and successes can be collected when all are in one place for a period of time. Reinventing the wheel is expensive and unnecessary.

I would like to see a public report from commissioners Emerson and Homola about what they learned from their attendance at the NAC Legislative Conference. Each serve on a different steering committee, which gives our county the opportunity to gather vital multi-agency information from other counties on what is happening around the country and how that can apply to Island County. A report on their specific committee assignments would be valuable to us as their constituents.

Commissioner Johnson opted not to attend in order for us to have a contact here at home. I know she has been to other conferences and has represented us well, while gathering valuable information from the other county representatives. This information has enabled her and our county commissioners to help us here in Island County create a wonderful lifestyle that benefits all.

I look forward to an article in the near future giving us a report on what the commissioners learned and how they are going to use this information to continue, or better, our lives here in Island County.
