Wearing blackface is offensive to any reasonable person.
When the person wearing the blackface is a political candidate, the act is doubly offensive.
When the candidate is oblivious to the fact that blackface is offensive — well that’s just ignorance beyond imagination.

From 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, we are going to have a party on the new plaza in the center of Langley and everyone is invited. The Langley Main Street Association and the Langley Chamber of Commerce have partnered with the City of Langley to host this event. Main Street arranged for veterans from the Whidbey Veterans Resource Center to prepare a summer barbecue for everyone. It will be a time of ribbon cutting, enjoying local food, drink, music, and celebrating moving our economy and city into a future filled with hope and promise.
The boat launch at Possession Point Waterfront Park may soon get an overhaul.
The Port of South Whidbey is in the process of planning substantial renovations, and the commissioners are right to pursue this long overdue project. The proposal recently came under fire from neighbors concerned about potential noise impacts, and their objections should be thoughtfully considered, but not at the expense of the interests of the public and the environment.
They’re after me. It’s true. This is no joke. They read my column last week or something because the little devils know, and they are after me.
Now I must admit that nothing has actually happened yet. In fact, our exchanges have been all too brief, but I fear confrontation may be a foregone conclusion as sightings are increasing by the day.
Whether the rusty, barnacle-encrusted anchor gingerly raised from the swift waters off of Whidbey Island is truly a relic of Captain George Vancouver’s expedition remains to be seen.
Nonetheless, the anchor’s recovery is a story of dedication, determination, mystery and adventure.
In summary, it contains all of the elements of an engaging story.
I ran over a rabbit on the way to work this week.
Hitting wildlife seems to be a rite of passage for Whidbey Islanders, but I still feel like scum. It wasn’t a deer, but why couldn’t it have been a caterpillar?
Graduation, it’s finally arrived.
It’s what seniors have been waiting for, and what parents have secretly dreaded. Or, perhaps for some families it’s the other way around. Let’s just say it’s when kids become adults and it’s the time for parents to let go … wait, I might have that backwards again.
