Angelina Berger absolutely wrecked her personal South Whidbey High School discus record.

It’s impressive because she beat her own mark, and the Falcon senior did it at the state 1A track and field meet. With Berger’s first-place finish, the South Whidbey girls team placed 10th at the meet in Yakima.

“All the girls competed in the very last available events of the entire season at the state meet and stepped off the track and out of the ring for the last time as the most successful Falcon athletes of the year,” said Falcon head coach Mark Eager.

Competing in her final high school track meet as a Falcon, Berger slung the discus 128 feet, 5 inches. Her state-title throw was eight feet, six inches farther than her previous best toss. Berger beat the second-place finisher, Chelan’s Karle Pittsinger, by almost two feet.

She also placed third in the shot put by throwing 38 feet, 8 inches. Pittsinger won the shot put with a mark of 42 feet, 0.50 inches and Lynden Christian sophomore Morgan Van Kooten, placed second.

Another Falcon placed well in the discus, Kristen Schuster. The sophomore capped the season with her best throw at 106 feet, 8 inches and finished as one of the top eight discus throwers in 1A.

The surprise of the meet was freshman Tera Applegate. She placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.89 seconds. It was a bit of a rally as she ran a 17-second race in the prelims, one of her slowest times in almost a month.

Two of South Whidbey’s three relay teams at the state meet competed in the finals. The 1,600-meter and the 800-meter relays placed eighth. Each squad, perhaps a bit exhausted from the prelim race, ran slower in the final heat. The 1,600-meter relay team of seniors Sylvia Kaul-Anderson, Nora Felt, Anna Hood and junior Madi Boyd finished the race in 4:15.77, the fastest time of the year for South Whidbey.

Boyd and Hood also raced with the 800-meter relay along with Applegate and junior Maia Sparkman. They finished the two-lap course in 1:49.15, just a second slow of their season-best time set in the prelims.

Only the girls 400-meter relay missed qualifying for the final heat by .19 seconds in the prelims.

Lillianna Stelling, a senior, capped her career with an eighth-place finish in the 3,200. She finished the eight-lap course in 11:37.41, a bit high of her career-fast time of 11:12.71, but plenty fast to finish as one of the best distance runners in 1A schools.

On the boys team, sophomore Cole Zink hit his average time in the 800 for an 11th-place finish. He also ran the 1,600-meter relay with Brandon Asay, Kale Reichersamer and Hunter Parrick in 3:37.02, which eliminated them from the final heat.

Nick French placed eighth in the javelin with a heave of 157 feet, 5 inches. While the distance was well short of his 1A second-ranked mark of 182 feet, 6 inches, the junior finished in the top half of the state field peppered with throws between 140 and 180 feet.

Cedar Park Christian’s girls won the team title with 67 points. South Whidbey placed 10th with 23 points, four points behind Cashmere and four points ahead of Zillah.

The Falcon boys team tied for 44th out of 44 teams.
