The Whidbey Crabs’ season came to an end last Sunday with two victories over the Maltby Battlecatts in Pony League baseball action. The Crabs pounded the Battlecatts in the opener 15-3 to avenge an earlier loss to the Battlecatts during the Memorial Day Tournament. Then Whidbey clung to a slim lead for a 10-8 win in the final contest to finish the season 33-3 in its second year as a club.

Ricky Muzzy led the Crabs in the first game with three hits and pitched a complete game. Muzzy limited the hard-hitting ‘Catts to just three runs on 84 pitches. The Crabs put pressure on the visitors throughout the line up with two hits each from Charlie Patterson, Kohl Hunter, Trent Fallon and Peter Jacobs.

In the final game, the Crabs used the long ball to take an 8-1 lead. Muzzy led with back-to-back home runs and Josiah Sergeant had a bases-clearing triple before the second inning ended. Muzzy added another single to complete another three-hit game; he went 16-for-22 in the final three weeks of the season. Patterson added two more hits in the contest, while the pitching corps of Fallon, Patterson, Will Simms and Jacobs battled the ‘Catts to a 10-8 victory to end the season.

The Whidbey Baseball Club will hold tryouts at the end of August to begin setting its roster for the 2013 season. Players age 13 to 14 that reside anywhere on Whidbey Island with their birth dates before May 1 are eligible to participate in the Pony League organization. The Whidbey Crabs participate in the Mountlake Terrace Youth Athletic Association.
