Falcon grapplers lose in opening round at state

South Whidbey wrestlers freshman Aryeh Rohde (120), junior Hunter Newman (138), senior Madison Evans (152) and junior Chase Barthlett (285) lost in the first round of their respective weight divisions at the WIAA Mat Classic State Championships, held in the Tacoma Dome.

South Whidbey wrestlers freshman Aryeh Rohde (120),  junior Hunter Newman (138), senior Madison Evans (152) and junior Chase Barthlett (285) lost in the first round of their respective weight divisions at the WIAA Mat Classic State Championships, held in the Tacoma Dome.

Rohde was pinned by Colville’s TJ Baun in the first period. Newman, a two-time state participant, was pinned by Granger’s Frankie Almager with 57 seconds remaining in the third period. Evans was pinned by Dean Lockwood of Deer Park. Barthlett was pinned by Kiona-Benton’s Tanner Cook.

Barthlett was a state alternate until an injury sustained by a wrestler in South Whidbey’s region allowed him to compete.
