Falcons fall to Wolves in cross-island hoops battle

Still looking for that first victory, the South Whidbey girls basketball team fell 55-29 to energized cross-island rival Coupeville Friday night.

The Falcons are 0-1 in league action, 0-6 overall, while Coupeville improved to 1-0 and 5-1 overall.

Falcon Cayla Calderwood scored a team-high 15 points for South Whidbey. Wolf Ashley Manker scored 16 points, while teammate Cassidi Rosenkrance added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals to lead Coupeville to the win.

The team was overcome in three of four quarters, only showing a little spark in the third, outscoring the Wolves 13-8. By then, it was too late.

“It was another case of problems controlling the basketball, poorly thrown passes and, of course, erratic shooting,” said Falcon coach Henry Pope. “And due credit must be given to Coupeville; they played an excellent game.”

Pope added that he has some concerns about the level of dedication the team has displayed.

“I know the girls work hard, but some of them don’t have the right practice mindset. There’s a lack of intensity, and that carries through onto the court,” he said

After Calderwood, Falcon Ashlinn Prosch contributed four points while Courtney Linehan and Reilly O’Sullivan had three each.
