Falcons shoot past Wolves / Soccer

A large shot advantage led the South Whidbey High School soccer team to a 5-0 win over visiting Coupeville Friday, March 29.

The victory enabled the Falcons (3-0, 6-1) to keep pace with King’s (3-0, 4-1-1) atop the North Sound Conference.

South Whidbey plays at Renton’s Lindbergh High School (2-4-1) in a non-league game at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and then travels to King’s at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in a showdown for first place.

Michael Lux recorded a hat trick for the Falcons, who enjoyed a 20-3 shots on goal advantage.

Despite the onslaught by South Whidbey, “Coupeville did an excellent job of compacting the middle defensively and they played aggressively and showed great effort all game long,” Falcon coach Emerson Robbins said.

Lux opened the scoring early on an assist from Nevin Daniels, then Coupeville kept the Falcons off the board for a good chunk of time before Thomas Simms “hit a beautiful curving shot that found the inside of the near post with only a few minutes left in the first half,” according to Robbins.

Lux scored the first two goals of the second half, the first off a pass from Reilly McVay who dribbled nearly to the goal line.

After Lux scored an unassisted goal, he made a nice save on a cross and almost scored again. The Coupeville keeper got a hand on the ball, and Graham Colar drove home the rebound.

“Our back line played extremely well, Joey Lane and Sequoia Durham as center backs and Thomas Simms and Eli Waldron at the outside backs,” Robbins said. “Thomas, especially, made quite a few great offensive supportive runs throughout the game and he continues to impress, both defensively and offensively.

“Cormac Workman and Aidan O’Brien are doing a fantastic job as defensive mids, winning balls constantly and distributing with beautiful passing out of the mid-field.”
